  • He earned his MBBS degree from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences, Kerala, and further completed his MS in General Surgery and M. Ch in Cardiovascular Surgery from the same institute.
  • With a career spanning over 22 years, he has held positions at renowned hospitals such as Apollo Hospital, Dhaka, Narayana Hrudayalaya, Jaipur, Global Hospital Group Chennai, and Fortis Hospital, Gurugram.
  • Dr. Sandeep Attawar has conducted more than 9000 cardiac surgeries during his illustrious career.
  • He serves as the Chair & Director of Thoracic organ transplants and Assist devices at KIMS Institute for Heart & Lung transplantation.
  • He specialized in General surgery at the Sheth KM school of PG medicine and later in Cardiac surgery at the Sri Chitra Thirunal institute, Trivandrum.
  • Dr. Attawar has focused on setting up greenfield heart surgical services since 2001 and expanded into Thoracic organ transplantation and mechanical circulatory support since 2011.
  • He led the establishment of heart and lung transplant centers at Gleneagles Global hospitals across Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Bombay.
  • He founded the Solid thoracic organ TX program at KIMS Hospitals and his team has performed close to 450+ thoracic organ transplants, including Double lung transplants, Heart transplants, and Combine Heart & Lung transplants.
  • He actively participates in international cardiothoracic forums like the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT), Society of Thoracic surgeons (STS), and the European association of cardio-thoracic surgery (EACTS).
  • Dr. Attawar is part of the international panel of 24 experts forming consensus guidelines for Lung Transplantations at ISHLT.
  • He is a contributor to the textbook 'Transplantations & Mechanical Circulatory Support for end-stage Lung and Heart disease' due for release next year.
  • His work is published in leading journals like the Annals of Thoracic Surgery (ATS), and he contributes to papers and presentations delivered worldwide.
  • He serves as a scientific advisor for Reliant Heart and is involved in advancing the field of mechanically assisted circulation or Long-term Ventricular assist devices (LVAD).
  • Dr. Attawar is on the editorial board of the Journal of Thoracic disease and currently serves as the proctor for JARVIK HEART and Heart Mate III in India and South East Asia.
