As per the available data, there are approximately 11.5 million people aged over 40 years and older suffering from glaucoma. It’s an eye disease in which normal fluid pressure inside the eye rises. This rise in pressure, if left untreated, can gradually lead to vision loss and even blindness.
However, treatment cannot reverse previous vision loss, but it can help keep your vision from deteriorating further. As per our expert eye surgeons, surgery is not the first treatment option that you can count on in most cases, but it can save your eyesight if other treatments don’t work well. Here we’ve covered laser eye surgery as a glaucoma treatment option, how this can help keep your eyesight better, and many more.

The treatment for open-angle glaucoma focuses on lowering intraocular pressure to prevent optic nerve damage. Eye drops and laser treatment are the most common glaucoma treatments. Some medications and laser treatments allow for faster drainage of fluid within the eye, while others reduce the amount of fluid produced. If medications and lasers do not relieve the pressure, incision surgery may be necessary.
When you receive laser therapy, your doctor will:
-Put drops in your eye to numb it.
-Using a special lens, aim a laser (a strong beam of light) into your eye.
-Use the laser to aid in the drainage of fluid from your eye.
-During the treatment, you may see flashes of bright green or red light. During the procedure, most people experience little to no pain or discomfort.
If you have glaucoma in both eyes, your doctor may treat both on the same day, or he or she may treat one eye and schedule treatment for the other a few days or weeks later.
The day after their laser treatment, most people can resume their normal daily activities.
Your eye may be irritated and your vision may be blurry right after the treatment, so you'll need someone to drive you home from the doctor's office.
Immediately following the laser procedure, some patients experience eye irritation or blurriness. Most people can resume their normal activities the next day after laser eye surgery.
Although laser surgery has successfully treated many glaucoma patients, no procedure is without risk. Following treatment, there may be a brief increase in intraocular pressure. Intraocular pressure may also drop, making normal eye metabolism impossible to maintain. There is also a slight risk of developing cataracts after certain glaucoma laser procedures.
If laser eye surgery is recommended, your eye surgeon will go over the procedure's advantages and disadvantages.
