What is ICSI?

The head of the sperm must penetrate the egg wall and sperm must swim into the cytoplasm of the mature egg for effective fertilization of a man's sperm and a woman's egg.

If the egg wall is too thick to penetrate or the sperm are unable to swim in the cytoplasm of the egg due to motility difficulties, intracytoplasmic sperm cell injection(ICSI) may be the only option.

Why do you need to undergo an ICSI procedure?

  • If the male partner is facing reproduction problems, such as male infertility,
  • Semen of poor quality
  • Low sperm count, also known as oligospermia, is a condition in which the number of sperm produced is insufficient.
  • Asthenozoospermia is a condition in which sperm motility is reduced.
  • Previous failures of IVF procedures.
  • Teratozoospermia refers to sperm that are abnormally formed.
  • Infertility due to unknown reason

In most IVF situations, ICSI is performed in conjunction with IVF treatment to boost the odds of successful fertilization and pregnancy.

ICSI is sometimes used in reversal vasectomy instances to ensure that fertilization can occur without difficulties, as there is a risk of sperm destruction due to antibodies created by the male partner's body after the surgery.

What are the conditions treated by ICSI?

Following are the conditions that require ICSI treatment

  • To make the frozen sperms active in the situation of retrograde ejaculation, i.e. if sperms are coming out in a different method than typical (via testicular extraction or through urine).
  • The ICSI method can overcome the hardening of eggshells in the case of frozen oocytes.
  • IVF is paired with ICSI if there is no previous history of fertilized eggs despite the male partner's normal sperm count.

How the procedure is performed?

  • The intracytoplasmic sperm injection method is primarily technique-dependent and can be performed under the guidance of your fertility doctor.
  • In the first phase, semen is collected from the male partner via natural ejaculation or through surgical removal by fertility specialists.
  • After retrieving the sperm, they must be stored in the fertility lab in a frozen state.
  • Meanwhile, mature eggs are extracted from the female partner during her ovulation cycle using an ultrasonic probe and a fine needle. Although the surgery will not be painful, you may experience some vaginal bleeding or bruising in the area.
  • Following the collection of sperm, the sperms are promptly extracted, cleaned, and the seminal fluid debris is removed.
  • Sperms are injected into the cytoplasm of developed eggs via a hollow tube. Fertilization and embryo formation will take about 24 hours.
  • The need for mature sperm to swim is eliminated because they are immediately injected into the cytoplasm of mature eggs.
  • Your fertility specialists will keep an eye on the progress of the fertilized embryo in the lab, as well as the embryo's growth and development.
  • This is a critical phase in the process since only the healthiest embryo should be implanted into the uterus.
  • If there are any extra healthy embryos in the freezer, you can tell your fertility specialists to save them for future IVF cycles( if the ongoing treatment fails)
  • Healthy embryos can be transported into the uterus using an ultrasonic probe-guided catheter after 2-5 days of fertilization.
  • You can take a pregnancy test after two weeks to see if the procedure is working or not.
