A facelift is a surgical procedure that includes the removal of excess skin so that the person may appear younger and beautiful than before. When skin ages, it becomes loose and loses its elasticity. The facelift surgery can tone the muscles that lead to the disappearance of fat.

Types of Facelift

Facelift are of seven types. These are:

  • Lower facelift and lower Neck Lift
  • Upper facelift
  • Full facelift
  • S-lift
  • Classic neck lift
  • Suture neck lift
  • Lower face and neck lift

Lower facelift and lower Neck lift

In this kind of facelift, the main focus is on the lower third of the face. Along with the face, the neck lift also takes place so that the results for the face matches with the neck.

Upper facelift

During the upper facelift procedure, the main region of the target is from the cheek to the jowls. This forms the upper half of the face.

Full facelift

In the full facelift, the skin is tightened all over the face. So, when a person wants to tighten the facial skin, he/she must opt for a full facelift. In this procedure, the neck is also touched up to match it with the facial skin.

S-lift

In this procedure, the main focus is on the jawline and the top half of the neck. So, when a person has sagging skin along the jawline, and the top half of the neck, they go for the S-lift.

Classic neck lift

If a person has sagging skin around the neck, they undergo the Classic neck lift procedure and get a youthful and classic neck contour.

Lower face and neck lift

This process improves the looks of the lower face and neck.

Suture neck lifts

In this procedure, the collagen strips made from cow tissue are used to suspend sagging tissues.

Why does a person need to undergo facelift surgery?

The best sign that a person needs a facelift is the appearance of wrinkles. When a person sees the increased number of wrinkles on the face and lack of firmness of the skin, then he/she can go for facelift surgery. Wrinkles and lack of firmness on the face may occur due to one of the following causes:

  • Heredity
  • Force of habit
  • Improper diet
  • Pull of gravity
  • Exposure to the elements

Facelift Surgery

Preparations needed for facelift surgery

  • Two weeks before the surgery, the patient must stop all medicines that prolong bleeding. This includes high dose vitamin E, analgesics, aspirin, Motrin, herbal medication, and fish oil.
  • The patient must avoid high salt content in the diet two days before the surgery.
  • The patient must stop smoking 15 days before the surgery. If the patient is able to avoid smoking even after the procedure is done, then it will speed up the healing process.

Facelift Surgery Procedure

  • Facelift surgery is performed under local anesthesia and sedatives in most cases. However, the surgeon may also perform the surgery under general anesthesia,
  • During the facelift process, the surgeon makes an incision that starts from the hairline, goes around the earlobe and ends at the bottom of the hairline.
  • The surgeon separates the muscle and fat underneath from the skin and may suction off the fat to reshape the contours of the face.
  • The surgeon tightens the mass of tissue underneath called the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System).
  • Then the surgeon pulls the skin back and uses a laser or knife to trim the excess skin.
  • The incision is closed using sutures. At times, skin glue can also be used. The stitches remain invisible as they are under the hairline.

After-effects of the facelift surgery

  • The patient may experience some degree of pain and brushing.
  • The patient's face may swell for a while; however, he/she may keep the swelling down by using the cold compress.
  • While lying down, the patient must remember to keep the face in an elevated position.
  • The patient must avoid strenuous activities for two to three weeks after the surgery.

Tests and Diagnosis for Facelift surgery

Before doing the facelift surgery, the doctor will order a series of tests to check whether the person is prepared for the surgery or not. This may include the following tests:

  1. Tests to rule out anemia or any clotting disorder
  2. Tests to check the exposure of HIV or Hepatitis C
  3. Diabetes tests
  4. Females of the childbearing age will go through a urine pregnancy test
