Plastic surgery is a type of surgery that aims to improve a person's appearance. Procedures are available for almost every part of the body, but the choice to undergo plastic surgery should not be taken lightly because the results are often permanent. So it is important for the person to be sure about the decision, have the right motivation, and select an appropriate practitioner.

Usually, a surgeon refers a patient for counseling before surgery if he/she believes there is some problem that cannot be solved by the surgery, or if the patient shows some signs of BDD (Body Dysmorphic Disorder.)

BDD is actually a perception that can cause a person to perceive that something was seriously wrong with his/her appearance when objective evidence suggests otherwise.

Types and uses

A variety of aesthetic procedures are available for different parts of the body.

Breast surgery

Women may breast surgery to enhance her appearance if she thinks that her breasts are too small, both are of unequal size, too large.

Several procedures can be performed to enhance breast appearance:

Breast Augmentation: It is a surgery to increase breast size. It is also known as augmentation mammoplasty. Breast augmentation includes placing breast implants under the chest muscles or breast tissue.

For some women, breast augmentation may be a way to feel more confident while for others, it may be a part of rebuilding the breast for various conditions.

Breast augmentation might help women:

  • Enhance her appearance if she thinks that her breasts are too small or both are of unequal size
  • Reduce in the size of the breasts after pregnancy
  • Correct uneven breasts after breast surgery for any condition
  • Improve her self-confidence

Breast Reduction: It provides relief from physical discomfort, while the aim of breast augmentation more often is related to appearance.

Breast Lift: A breast lift, also known as bust lift or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that firms and raises the breast to enhance their appearance and shape. Breast lift is required to correct the excessive sagging of the breast. The firmness and tightness are achieved by removing excess skin, tightening the surrounding tissue, and raising the nipple. The stretched areola can also be reduced during the breast lift procedure.

There are a variety of incision techniques used for breast lift surgery. The exact technique used by the surgeon depends on the expectation of the patient. The incision procedure may also vary for each patient depending on the sagging degree and the amount of excess skin that is to be removed. The following type of breast lift surgery may be used:

  1. Crescent Lift
  2. Donut Lift
  3. Vertical or "Lollipop" Lift
  4. Inverted T or "Anchor" Lift

Male Breast Reduction: It is a procedure to treat gynecomastia, which is an enlargement of the mammary tissue in men. It may be performed by liposuction or with various scar patterns, often hidden around the nipple and areola.

Liposuction

Liposuction, also called liposculpture suction, Lipoplasty, or lipectomy, is a kind of cosmetic surgery that is used to break up and suck the fat from the body.

It is often used on the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, neck, chin, backs and uppers of the arms, calves, and back.

Liposuction can be of following types:

  1. Traditional Liposuction
  2. Tumescent /Super wet Liposuction
  3. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL)
  4. Power-assisted liposuction (PAL)
  5. Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL)

Vulvovaginal surgery

Labiaplasty, labioplasty, labia reduction, or minor labia reduction, involves surgery of the labia minora or labia majora of the vulva, a part of the female genitalia. It is done to reduce elongated labia, usually as part of a vaginoplasty.

There is a lack of scientific or clinical evidence to guide gynecological surgeons as to the effectiveness and safety of cosmetic vaginal procedures.

Body procedures

The Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic procedure for a firmer and thinner abdomen. Abdominoplasty procedure enhances the appearance of the abdomen by getting rid of excess fat and skin that cannot be removed by diet control or exercise.

Abdominoplasty can be of following types:

  1. Complete/ Traditional abdominoplasty
  2. Partial or mini abdominoplasty
  3. Extended abdominoplasty
  4. High Lateral tension tummy tuck
  5. Floating Abdominoplasty or FAB Technique
  6. Circumferential abdominoplasty
  7. Combination procedures

Other body contouring procedures

Buttock Augmentation: It is a procedure to enhance the appearance of the buttocks by making them larger. The surgeon grafts fat from another part of the patient's body. This is termed as the "Brazilian Butt lift." Occasionally, Silicone implants may also be used in the buttocks.

Buttock Lift: A lower body lift or buttock lift is the removing of excess skin from the buttocks, hips, and thighs in order to lift and tighten them.

Facial cosmetic surgery

  • Blepharoplasty: It is also known as eyelid surgery, is a surgery to reshape the eyelids. With age, the skin becomes lax, and there may be hooding or drooping of the upper lids, and bags on the lower lids. Eyelid surgery may be cosmetic, functional, or both. It usually involves repositioning or removing excess fat and skin, and the procedure may reinforce the surrounding tendons and muscles.
  • Rhinoplasty: It is also known as a nose job, where the surgeon reshapes the nose of the patient to improve the appearance and breathing, too. It may involve reshaping the tip and reducing the bony hump at the upper aspect of the nose.
  • Otoplasty: It is also known as ear surgery, which treats misshapen or prominent ears by surgically "pinning" the ear closer to the head with reshaping the cartilage, sutures, or both.
  • Rhytidectomy: It is also known as a facelift, which is a surgical procedure that includes the removal of excess skin so that the person may appear younger and beautiful than before. When skin ages, it becomes loose and loses its elasticity. The facelift surgery can tone the muscles that lead to the disappearance of fat.
  • Browplasty: It is also known as a brow lift, or forehead lift, which aims to remove signs of aging by removing worry lines or forehead wrinkles or raising drooping eyebrows. It is often done with other cosmetic procedures that help to achieve a more harmonious facial appearance.

Malar, or cheek augmentation is a surgical procedure that is used to make the cheekbones more prominent. In this procedure, the surgeon may place an implant at the top of the cheekbones.

Hair transplantation

Hair transplantation is a surgical process where hair follicles are relocated from the donor area to the bald area or recipient area, resulting in mimicking natural hair growth. Medications help in the treatment of hair fall and thinning of hair, but when there is a bald spot, only transplantation will help.

Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS)

  • In this hair transplantation procedure, a strip of hair is taken from the donor site usually posterior scalp under local anesthesia.
  • Then, after the graft is dissected from the strip, it is harvested into the bald area.
  • It will leave a visible scar on the donor area, which can be covered by patients' hair.
  • There will be some tenderness/pain after the procedure.
  • The recovery period is slightly more extended (around 15 days) as staples/stitches need to be removed.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

  • In this method of hair transplantation, individual follicular units are removed one by one under local anesthesia.
  • The recovery period is less than seven days as it usually requires very small punches between 0.6-1mm in diameter, so no suturing or closing required.
  • It is a painless minimally invasive procedure.
  • FUE is a time-consuming method, one long session or multiple small sessions are required for harvesting the hair follicle into the bald area.

Hair loss can be prevented by making lifestyle changes, stress management, having a healthy diet, including green leafy vegetables, and adequate protein in the diet. Hair can also be protected by keeping the scalp clean and conditioning the hair regularly by massaging hair oil.
