The heart is separated into two sides by an inner wall called septum. The septum prevents the mixing of blood (oxygen poor blood in the right side and oxygen rich blood in the heft side) between the two sides. Congenital heart defect or defects at birth such as hole in the septum leads to the mixing of oxygen poor blood and oxygen rich blood. ASD or Atrial Septal Defect is the hole in the septum between the hearts two upper chamber while VSD or Ventricular Septal Defect is referred to as a hole in the septum between the hearts two lower chambers. To close the hole in the septum an open heart surgery is done and a patch is used. The patch is made of synthetic material like Dacron or a patch of pericardium which is the thick sac that surrounds the heart. In the surgery the heart is stopped and then opened. Typically the length of the stay in the hospital is about 5 days and complications arising out of the procedure are also seen to be minimal.
